South Zone defeated East Zone in the Deodhar Trophy final. After winning the toss, South Zone elected to bat in the all-important final. Rohan Kunnummal was the pick of the batters from South Zone and received tremendous support from his bowlers in the second innings. Here is a look at the match flow.
South Zone’s batting
The South Zone openers, Kunnummal and skipper Mayank Agarwal made full use of the first 10 overs. The openers scored 79 runs in the first powerplay without losing the wicket. Kunnumal scored a century at a high strike rate. He scored 107 runs in just 75 balls. Captain scored 63 runs in 83 balls. The duo shared a 181-run opening partnership. Despite losing wickets in a cluster after a century opening stand the South Zone batters scored 164 runs in the middle powerplay. A half-century from Narayan Jagadeesan and a quickfire cameo by Sai Kishore helped them to reach a total of 328 runs.
The East Zone bowlers lacked discipline in their bowling as they could not bowl any maiden overs. Only Shahbaz Ahmed and Utkarsh Singh bowled with an economy of less than 6 RPO. In the 20 overs between them, they conceded only 105 runs. Manisankar Murasingh was the most expensive bowler as he conceded 52 runs in just seven overs. He bowled at an economy of 7.42 RPO. Akash Deep too bowled at an economy of more than 7 RPO and conceded 66 in his nine overs.
East Zone’s batting
In reply, while chasing 328 runs, East Zone got off to a poor start as they lost three wickets with just 14 runs on the board. Top-order batters Abhimanyu Easwaran (1), Utkarsh Singh (4) and Virat Singh (6) all registered single-digit scores. The skipper, Saurabh Tiwary came in to bat number 5. Tiwary couldn’t make full use of his experience as he scored 28 runs in 33 balls. After losing four wickets for just 72 runs in 16 overs, it looked gloomy for the East Zone. Tiwary’s dismissal meant that Riyan Parag came to the crease. Parag who had already scored two centuries had his task cut out for him. Parag shared a century stand for the sixth wicket with Kumar Kushagra. The former ended his innings with 95 runs in just 65 balls while wicketkeeper, Kushagra scored 68 runs from 58 balls. The runner-up lost their 10 wickets for 283 runs.
The South Zone bowlers unlike their opponents bowled with much discipline and took wickets at regular intervals. Sai Kishore and Washington Sundar took four wickets among them and conceded 105 runs in 20 overs. Sundar picked up the key wicket of Parag as well. Vidwath Kaverappa, Vasuki Koushik and Vijaykumar Vyshak also took two wickets each.
Rohan Kunnummal won the Player of the Match award for his century while Riyan Parag won the Player of the Tournament award for 354 runs and picking 11 wickets.
