Ashes: Nathan Lyon reveals Lord’s Long Room controversy

Ashes 2023 has already been a controversial series. Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal has caused a lot of stir. Nathan Lyon has revealed the Lord’s Long Room drama.

The dismissal of Jonny Bairstow was just one of numerous problems with the second Ashes Test. The England goalkeeper sprinted out of his crease after dodging a bouncer to confront Ben Stokes in the centre. Alex Carey threw the ball directly towards the stumps when he saw his opportunity. Bairstow was given the honour following a quick assessment.

As the team made its way back to the locker room following the incident, some men in the Long Room began verbally insulting the Australian players.

When discussing the incident, Nathan Lyon said, “There were a few Australian guys and a few English guys in the lunchroom and I hobbled up on my crutches and stood in the middle of it and tried to calm things down a little bit.”

Lyon discussed Jonny Bairstow’s response to the contentious dismissal. The off-spinner said, “Jonny had a few words here or there. That’s all part of it, I’m all for it.”

Due to the hatred being directed at the Australian players, the club had to call security, and three MCC members were suspended as a result. Lyon continued by saying that he had received an apology from a senior English woman for the members’ behaviour. Lyon said, “I actually had an older lady come up to me in tears, an English lady in tears from the main members’ area, and she said ‘I’ve got to go home. I just want to apologise to you Australian cricketers for the way everyone has reacted inside the Lord’s.”

Lyon expressed his emotions as the dispute over the dismissal was developing. He said, “I was in the change room and I just erupted. I was like ‘how good. Suck eggs. That’s out every day’.”

Jonny Bairstow

The focus of all the attention has been on Jonny Bairstow. The English wicketkeeper’s placement behind the wickets has drawn criticism. Geoffrey Boycott, a former England captain, favoured dropping Bairstow from the starting lineup. The starting lineup for the fourth test has been released by the hosts. The hosts’ keeper is still Bairstow.
