Former India cricketer Ajit Agarkar was named Chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday (July 4).
Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape of the CAC interviewed candidates for the job of one selector on the Men’s Selection Committee.
The CAC’s three members unanimously endorsed Agarkar for the position. Ajit Agarkar (42) will take over as chairman of selectors from former India cricketer Chetan Sharma. Sharma was fired following his sting operation.
Agarkar, a former India all-rounder who played in the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup, represented the country in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is, as well as 110 first-class, 270 List A, and 62 T20 matches. As a former fast bowler, he was a member of India’s winning T20 World Cup side in South Africa in 2007.
With a 21-ball fifty against Zimbabwe in 2000, he still maintains the record for the fastest half-century by an Indian hitter in an ODI. For nearly a decade, he also held the record for being the fastest to 50 ODI wickets, achieving the feat in just 23 matches.
Following his playing career, he was named Chief Selector for the senior Mumbai team and took on coaching duties with the Delhi Capitals.
“The committee further recommended Mr Agarkar for the role of Chairperson of the Men’s Selection Committee based on seniority (total number of Test matches),” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in an official release.
