Ashes 2023: Taufel shares thoughts on Bairstow dismissal

Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal has become a hot topic for debate in the ongoing Ashes. Umpire Simon Taufel shared his thoughts on the dismissal.

Australia is now leading the hosts, England, in the Ashes series, which is being played out in close quarters. The dismissal of England’s wicket-keeper batsman, Jonny Bairstow, during the second test match at Lord’s was the topic of the game despite it being a closely contested battle between the two teams. His dismissal sparked a discussion over “playing within the rules or within the spirit of the game.” Different ex-cricketers had differing views on the dismissal. Sir Geoffrey Boycott, a legendary English cricketer, demanded a public apology from the Australian team. Even umpire Simon Taufel expressed his opinions over Bairstow’s termination.

Jonny Bairstow dismissal

Cameron Green had thrown a short ball that Jonny Bairstow had ducked under. As Ben Stokes was batting at the other end, it was the final ball of the over and Bairstow was walking calmly towards his captain. Then, Alex Carey, the Australian wicketkeeper, displayed excellent field awareness by throwing the ball towards the stumps and catching Bairstow outside of his crease. Bairstow was taken aback since he had believed the ball to be dead, whereas the Australian team hadn’t.

While social media and England cricket fans are still debating the issue, famous umpire Simon Taufel has expressed his perspective on it. Taufel claims that England disagreed with the third umpire’s ruling that Bairstow was out, which may be considered the game’s pivotal decision. Taufel said, “Correct decision made. They (England) just didn’t like it. For that ball to be considered dead after the over or even after the delivery, both sides need to disregard it is in play. Clearly, the fielding side hadn’t.”

Ashes 2023

With two victories in a row, Australia will feel confident about taking home the Ashes. It’s interesting to note that Australia might win the Ashes for the first time since 2001 on English soil. Ben Stokes nearly replicated his 2018 feats of valour from Headingley after Bairstow was fired from Lord’s in 2019. It will be a major setback for the Australian team if Nathan Lyon, who has been their starting bowler for 100 straight series, has been ruled out of the series.
