Ashwin had come on to bowl his third over of the match when the whole review controversy happened. The off-spinner was bowling over the wicket as he beat batter, Rajkumar on the outside edge. Ashwin and keeper Baba Indrajith straight away thought they had dismissed Rajkumar for a caught behind. The umpire gave it out and Rajkumar reviewed it instantly.
The 3rd umpire in replays saw that there was a gap between the bat and the ball and the sound that everyone heard was of the bat hitting the ground. An unhappy Ashwin challenged the call made by the 3rd umpire. The decision remained the same even as the third umpire went to see the same replays again.
Ashwin’s take on it
The Dindigul Dragons’ captain was asked about the challenging an already reviewed decision in the post match interview. Ashwin said, “DRS is new in the tournament. There was a spike just before the ball passed the bat. I was not quite happy, I thought they’d see with a different angle.”
Rest of the match
The first team to bat was Ba11sy Trichy, and its captain, Ganga Sridhar Raju, opened the batting and finished with the top score of 48 runs off 41 balls. As wickets dropped often, Raju did not receive much assistance from the other end. Rajkumar played a fantastic knock of 39 runs in 22 balls despite all the turmoil that was surrounding him. Varun Chakaravarthy, Suboth Bhati, and Captain Ashwin were the top bowlers for the Dindigul Dragons. Right-arm medium bowler Bhati picked up two wickets in 3.1 overs while Chakaravarthy claimed three wickets in 4 overs while giving up 21 runs. While taking 2 wickets and giving up 26 runs, Ashwin also bowled a maiden. The Dragons were able to limit their opponents to a total of 120 runs thanks to a strong bowling performance.
The Dragons had a strong start in the second innings thanks to opener Shivam Singh, who hit 46 runs off just 30 balls. Adithya Ganesh scored 20 runs off 21 balls while batting at number 4, while Baba Indrajith scored 22 runs off 23 balls while batting at number 3. Following a stellar showing with the ball in hand, Bhati delivered a hard-hitting cameo with the bat, scoring 19 runs in only 8 balls. T Natarajan, R Silambarasan, R Alexander, and Antony Dhas all secured one wicket for the Trichy team. However, they were always on the losing end when they struggled with the bat in the first innings. The Dragons quickly completed the 120-run chase in just 14.2 overs.
