WTC Final: Did Shardul Thakur equal a Don Bradman record?

Shardul Thakur played a gutsy knock in WTC Final, where he scored a half-century. But did Shardul equal a record of Don Bradman and Allan Border?

Australia is gaining favouritism with each hour that passes in the World Test Championship Final. The Australian squad destroyed the Indian team in the first innings, scoring 469 runs on the strength of centuries from Travis Head and former Australia captain Steve Smith. India was again in trouble in the second innings when they were reduced to 71 for 4 and then 152 for 6. Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur reached a decent total during their century stand. Rahane was removed for 89 runs, preventing him from scoring a deserving century. On the other hand, Shardul was out for 51 runs.

Shardul’s great record

With a half-century, Shardul Thakur tied Sir Donald Bradman and Allan Border for the record. The Indian all-rounder’s century in the WTC Final was his third straight fifty at the ground. Bradman accomplished the feat from 1930 to 1934, whilst Border did it from 1985 to 1989.

Shardul had two fifties in two innings during India’s previous visit to England. Shardul hit 57 runs in just 36 balls while batting first. His fifty was the fastest fifty an Indian has ever struck in Test cricket in England, coming in just 31 balls, and it cemented his place in history. It’s interesting to note that all four of his fifties have occurred abroad. In the second innings of the renowned Gabba test against Australia, he made 67 runs for his first fifty.

Don Bradman originally recorded a double century at The Oval during the lone innings of the 1930 tour. In 1934, he repeated the feat of scoring a double century at The Oval in the first inning and added 77 runs to his total.

Allan Border made 58 runs in the second innings at The Oval in 1985. When the Australian team returned in 1989, Border scored 76 runs in the first innings before going on to score 51 not out to help his team to a draw.
