World Test Championship finalist India has performed great in the test cricket till 14th December. India is going to play two test matches in the tour of South Africa from 26 Dec. if we don’t include the upcoming games, 2023 has been a great year in red-ball cricket for India. India has played the WTC final in June where Australians have registered a big win against Asians. Both teams have faced two times in ICC finals this year and Australia didn’t allow India to take charge.
If we talk about the longer format India has played seven games and won three out of them, they lost two, and two ended up in a draw. India has toured the West Indies for a bilateral series, hosted Australia for the Border-Gavaskar trophy, and visited England for the final of WTC final. Won both bilateral series but lost the WTC final in June. despite losing the final to Australia India is the number one test team according to the ICC rankings. Let’s cover these series individually.
Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Australia visited India just before the final game of WTC to play the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the last Border Gavaskar trophy India has registered a historic win to clinch the series in the final game at Gaba. This time Australia was looking for revenge by beating India at their home but things didn’t go well for guests and India grabbed another Border-Gavaskar trophy by 2-1. Hosts won the first two games and made sure that they were not going to lose, Australia made a comeback and beat the Asians in the third game but to level the series Aussies had to win the final game which was going to happen at Ahmedabad. In the high-scoring game, Australia escaped the loss and drew the game. Usman Khawaja with 333 runs was the top scorer in that series and Ravichandran Ashwin with 25 wickets was the leading wicket-taker.
World Test Championship Final
India was playing the consecutive second WTC final after losing the first one to New Zealand in 2021, this time it was Australia, whom India had recently defeated for the Border Gavaskar trophy. India was a favorite for the finals but Australia was much more familiar to that ground when it came to test cricket. On 7th July at the Oval, the final game started and ended up winning by Australia with 209 runs.
The game was one-sided and Australia registered a terrific win by 209 runs in the final day by destroying the Indian batting order. Centurion Travis Head becomes the player of the match for scoring 163 runs in the first inning. Ajinkya Rahane with 135 runs was the leading run scorer for India.
India tour of West Indies
India visited the West Indies in July to play two test matches in the series. In the first test, India showed their dominance and won the game by innings and 141 runs, and in the second game West Indies made a better comeback and managed to draw the test on the final day.
Stats
Ravichandran Aswin has performed terribly with the ball in test cricket this year and in just six games he managed to pick 40 wickets which is the highest in this calendar year so far. Virat Kohli as usual is the leading run scorer for his nation.
